Why Movember Matters at AKFIT
Movember isn’t just a month, it’s a movement.
This is our time to stand together and raise awareness about key health issues faced by men (and truthfully, everyone): mental health struggles, suicide, and the cancers that men too often face in silence—prostate and testicular. Each of these challenges impacts countless lives every year, and too often, men hesitate to speak up or seek help. Movember is our opportunity to change that and make a meaningful difference in our community.
Here are some key details and statistics about the challenges we're tackling:
Mental Health: Men’s mental health is frequently under-discussed, and yet the impact is profound. Like it or not, we're somewhat conditioned as men to not speak openly about emotional challenges, leading to a culture of silence around mental well-being. Depression, anxiety, and other mental health issues can take a toll on anyone, but men often feel they lack a safe space to address these struggles. Movember encourages men to reach out, have open conversations, and connect with others who understand what they’re going through. By creating awareness, we can help men feel less isolated, and every conversation can make a difference in lifting the stigma.
Suicide Prevention: Tragically, men make up the majority of suicide cases in Canada. 12 people die by suicide each day (4500 per year), with men outnumbering women 3 to 1. Many factors contribute, from personal crises to untreated mental health issues, with societal pressures playing a significant role. Men are often conditioned to be “strong” and self-reliant, leading them to cope alone instead of seeking support. By dedicating Movember to suicide prevention, we remind everyone that it’s okay to ask for help, that no one is truly alone, and that there are resources, friends, and community support ready to help anyone in crisis.
Prostate Cancer: Prostate cancer is one of the most common cancers in men. It can be a frightening diagnosis, but when caught early, it’s highly treatable. The problem? Too often, men delay screenings due to discomfort, fear, or simple lack of awareness.
Testicular Cancer: Testicular cancer primarily affects younger men, yet it’s rarely discussed openly. Because of this, men may not be aware of the signs or may hesitate to talk to a doctor if they notice something unusual. Movember’s cancer awareness efforts focus on breaking the silence and educating men on how to check themselves and when to seek medical advice. Early detection is key to effectively treating this cancer, and by bringing it to light, we can help men of all ages stay informed and proactive about their health.
A Holistic Approach to Men's Health Awareness
We believe in a balanced approach to health and well being, and that one area can often affect another in ways that aren't always necessarily obvious. Through promoting physical health and fitness and creating positive routines for example, this usually has a carryover effect through multiple means into a person's state of mind. Addressing the issues which often underlie substance abuse can have a staggeringly positive effect on health, relationships and significantly lower cancer risk.
For three years, AKFIT has proudly supported Movember, driven by a commitment to see real change. This year, we’re going a step further: 100% of proceeds from all AKFIT apparel and merchandise sold in November will go to the Movember Foundation and MADD (Mothers Against Drunk Driving) Canada. Whether it’s a shirt you wear to work, a hoodie you take to the gym, or gear that sparks a conversation in your community, your purchase supports these causes and can potentially truly help save lives.
Join us, and together, let’s make this month a time to open up, support one another and create lasting change.
